How to Choose the Right Grill: Outdoor Living Tips from Your Michigan Pool Repair Company

BBQ Grill

When it comes to grilling out, not any old thing will do for your poolside or outdoor living area. Or will it? Even with lots of options on the market, there is the perfect grill for your needs just waiting to be picked up. And in order to do so, you have to ask yourself a few simple questions.

What size grill do I need? Depending on the amount of people you’ll be cooking for most of the time will determine what size grill will fit your needs.

What features do I want? Today’s grills come fully equipped with a plethora of bells and whistles, but not all of them are necessary. Decide what features are most important to you and stick to them.

What’s my budget? Grills are offered in every price point. Before you go, decide what is the bottom line you are willing to spend.

What kind of fuel will I use? Grills run off of propane, natural gas, charcoal, electricity or wood pellet fuel. Pick a fuel that is best suited for your lifestyle — are you wanting to buy charcoal when you run out or just plug the thing in when it’s time to cook?

Bye Bye Bugs: Outdoor Living Tips from Your Pool Service Experts

all natural bug repellent

Pesky insects are no fun when you’re trying to enjoy a nice night outdoors. Between commercially sold insect repellent, citronella candles and natural remedies, there are different ways to protect yourself against the annoying bugs. So which one should you choose?

According to experts, DEET is the best way to get rid of insects. DEET, diethyl toluamide, can be integrated into repellent in two ways — through a controlled release formula or in high concentrations. And the control-release formula has been tested to be the most effective, as a case study published in 2002 in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that DEET at 6.7 percent did not register a bite until 112 minutes.

In that same study, citronella was also tested, and at 10 percent, a bite registered at 19.7 minutes. Citronella candles are widely available, but their effectiveness is not necessarily as strong as a product containing DEET.

Another option for insect repellent is treating your clothes with permethrin. It is effective against ticks, mosquitoes, mites and 50 other insects, and it’s considered to be biodegradable because when tested it was shown not to accumulate in the environment.

Natural remedies that include soybean oil, geranium oil and crushed chrysanthemums do repel insects, however their duration in doing so is unpredictable. The bottom line is you have to decide if effectiveness or longevity are more important for you and go from there.

Keep the Pool Fun With These Extras: Fun Ideas from Your Pool Service Experts

Michigan pool fun

There was a time when a pool did all the entertaining by itself — there wasn’t a need for something else. But these days kids like to have toys in the pool, floats to splash around on and slides to fly down. So it definitely pays to know what fun toys are out there.

When it comes to toys and floats, the list is really endless. So it’d be difficult to name every pool toy on the market. However, some popular favorites include diving toys, water-friendly sporting games like basketball, volleyball and football, and squirt guns.

Float options are abundant but it’s important to remember a few things. Inflatable rafts and floats are not meant to be safety devices. Children who don’t know how to swim shouldn’t treat them as such, nor should parents. Some people recommend deflating the toys after pool time is over because children associate play time with the toy and may thing it’s still OK to use it, even if the pool is unsupervised.

Adding a slide would also be a permanent way to have some extra fun in the pool. They are made from fiberglass or acrylic and come equipped with a hose that connects to the pool’s return line so a constant stream of water can run down it and keep the surface wet for an easier glide down.

Pool Deck Maintenance Made Easy!

Michigan pool deck maintenance

Just as your pool needs regular care, so does your pool deck. It receives just as much traffic, if not more, as your swimming pool and is exposed the elements year round. A dirty pool deck is not only unattractive, but it makes keeping a clean pool that much harder! To keep your pool area looking its best, dedicate a little time to pool deck maintenance at least once a year with these easy tips from HGTV.

http://www.hgtv.com/decks-patios-porches-and-pools/deck-maintenance-tips/index.html

If your deck is showing some wear and tear after being exposed to the weather for a few years, make it look new again by applying a little first aid. Here’s the to-do list:

  • Wash

Before making any repairs to the deck, remove dirt and wood fibers with a pressure washer. When using one, be sure to keep the pressure stream moving. Otherwise, you could gouge the wood. Allow the deck to dry overnight.

  • Fix nail pops

If you encounter a nail that has worked loose from a board, remove the nail with a cat’s paw or a hammer. Use a screw that’s longer than the nail to reattach the board.

  • Repair split wood

If you have a board that’s split down the middle, mark the damaged board next to the leading edge of the first support joist that’s completely past the split. Be sure not to mark an area that’s directly over a joist or you could damage your saw when you begin cutting.

Cut the board with a jigsaw, remove the nails or deck screws and remove the damaged wood. Use deck screws to attach a pressure-treated 2-by-4-inch support block to the joist. The support block will hold the replacement board in position. Cut a replacement board to size, pre-drill and fasten it to the support block and joists with deck screws.

Your replacement board may appear to be higher and wider than the existing wood, but it should shrink as it loses moisture. If the board still appears to be higher than the surrounding boards after being in place for a few weeks, you can smooth it down with a belt sander. Be sure that all nail or screw heads are recessed into the wood before you begin sanding.

  • Stain and seal

Even though pressure-treated lumber resists insects and decay, it’s still vulnerable to moisture and the sun’s rays. To preserve it without changing the color, use s clear wood preservative that contains a UV protector, which will bring new life to the surface while protecting it from the elements. If you want to add color, use an exterior stain first. Exterior stains come in both solid and semi-transparent finishes. Always use the semi-transparent for the decking area, but try a solid color if you want to highlight railings or banisters; it ends up looking like a painted finish. Exterior stains are available in oil or latex, and both provide fade and mildew resistance.

Wearing protective eyewear and gloves, apply preservative or stain with a roller or a brush. Let the product sit on the wood decking for about 20 minutes so that it has time to penetrate, and then go back over the surface with a brush to give the deck a more consistent finish (this also helps get rid of any puddles that will dry as shiny patches). Apply a second coat for good coverage and protection.

Allow the deck to dry for 48 hours, and then apply a sealant.

Summer Pool Maintenance Tips from Your Pool Service Experts

Pool maintenance in summer

Keep your pool looking beautiful all summer long with these pool maintenance tips.

It’s summertime and with the pool is in use constantly, you can’t afford to have something go wrong. Here are a few tips to keep the pool in the best shape for the prime swimming season.

Keep Algae at Bay

Be on the lookout for algae and treat it as soon as you see it. Green algae clings to the walls and can clog your filter or create surface damage. Mustard algae looks a lot like sand or dirt in the bottom of the pool, so it’s easy to sweep it away and assume it was nothing. It will return quickly so be sure to chemically treat it once you discover that it wasn’t dirt.

Watch for Cloudy Water

Pay attention to the clarity of the water. If you treated your water and it’s still murky or hazy, that can be caused by poor filtration. Clean the filter and check the water circulation, both of which will play a role in the how clear your water is.

Monitor Water Level

Because summer brings about hot temperatures, the pool water can evaporate and lead to water loss, which will affect the pool’s equipment. Be sure to check water levels and designate a day or two a week to add water. Another great way to prevent evaporation would be to keep a cover on your pool when not in use.

Regular Pool Cleaning

Always clean the pool daily. Create a weekly schedule of when you brush the floors and walls, scrub the waterline, vacuum the entire pool and skim it. With the pool in use so often, bodily oils,  suntan lotion and oil and chemical residual can wreck havoc on the water. Keeping the pool clean will help keep it in use longer.

How to Clean Your Pool Filter: Pool Maintenance Tips from Splash Pool Services

pool filter cartridge

Think of the pool filter like a filter in a vacuum, if it’s all clogged and dirty, efficiency will go down and things won’t get sucked up. But unlike a vacuum, this is a more costly fix should something not work, so keeping the pool filter clean is one of the most effective ways that your pool will operate at its best.

The most common type of pool filter is a cartridge filter and keeping it clean is relatively easy. When it’s time for a cleaning, grab the hose, gently remove the filter and start washing — but not harshly, a gentle stream will do. If you spray the filter with a high pressure nozzle you can cause damage, ultimately having to buy yourself a new filter because the debris will either furrow itself deeper in the cartridge or you’ll tear or damage the filter.

There are cleaning solutions available for cleaning the filter, as well. Many of these solutions require the filter to soak in it for maximum benefit, so make sure to rinse off the solution after you’ve allowed it to soak.

If you still notice that the pool is not functioning at its best after you routinely clean your filter, it might be time for a new one. Depending on how old your filter is, there are better, more efficient ones on the market.

Water Chemistry Basics: Pool Maintenance Tips from Splash Pool Services

Pool water chemistry

Basic pool chemistry is made up of a few components: pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and free chlorine. Understanding why each one plays a role in your pool’s function is vital to maintaining great water chemistry.

The pH level is the measure of the relative acid or base of the pool water, and it should be maintained within 7.2 and 7.8. Too high pH readings will lead to cloudy water, staining, scale deposits, filtration issues and chlorine will become less efficient. Too low pH readings could cause corrosion to pipework, etched plaster and loss of chlorine. Some recommend testing the pH level daily so you can maintain a level that keeps the water clear.

Total alkalinity measures the pool water’s ability to resist change in the pH level, so if you maintained a good total alkalinity level you’d most likely maintain a good pH level. The perfect total alkalinity level stays within 75 and 120 ppm (parts per million).

Calcium hardness is measured in the amount of dissolved calcium in your pool water, and it should stay between 100 and 500 ppm. Readings on the high side will cause cloudy water and scale deposits, while low readings can cause corrosion.

Chlorine is used to sanitize and disinfect the pool water by releasing free chlorine to control germs, micoorganisms and algae. Your free chlorine reading should be between 1 and 2 ppm each time you check, which should be daily because of how often that level can fluctuate.

Choosing the Right Outdoor Furniture, from your Michigan Pool Service Provider, Splash Pools

Outdoor furniture - woodOutfitting the backyard with patio furniture is much like decorating a room in your house. You pick a color scheme, see what furniture fits in the space you have, choose items that blend together and end up creating an area that has a theme of its own. And much like interior design, the options for designing the backyard are endless. Patio furniture is available in many materials: plastic, aluminum, wrought iron, wicker and wood.

In order to decide which one to choose, you have to understand how each one works in the elements.

Aluminum furniture does not rust and is defined as pretty much indestructible. It can be cleaned with warm soapy water and is fairly lightweight. Wrought iron is much heavier, and because it is powder coated, if the paint chips, it becomes susceptible to rusting. It can also be cleaned with soapy water.

Wicker is a popular choice, but it’s not very durable. It is weather resistant and easy to clean, though. Wood furniture will weather over time, creating a gray tone that is far fetched from the original look. Each year you’ll need to clean the wood and reseal it to last longer.

Once you choose your furniture, you’ll need to pick cushions and pillows. Be sure to choose fabrics that are water and UV resistant so they can last longer against the elements. When it’s time to pick the fabrics, don’t be overwhelmed, there are so many colors and patterns to choose from that will help make your backyard a perfect retreat outside the house.

The Right Kind of Pool Cleaner for You: Maintenance Tips from Your Pool Service Experts

Swimming Pool Cleaner

There are a variety of pool cleaners on the market, so it’s important to find the one that will work best for you. Understanding what options are out there is the first step.

Automatic Pressure-Side Cleaners function from water pressure coming from a pump, whether it is your main circulation pump or a dedicated booster pump. The pressure forces the pump to move around the pool and pick up debris into the attached bag. There are a few pros and cons to the pressure-side cleaner — because of an attached bag, the cleaner doesn’t suck debris into your filter or pump basket, however, because of the attached bag, it cannot filter small particles. So while this cleaner would be ideal if your pool is surrounded by trees, it may not be the best if you  want to pick up smaller debris.

Automatic Suction-Side Cleaners rely on suction to move around the pool and vacuum debris off the pool floor. These kinds of cleaners also have the ability to scrub the walls, reducing the amount of time you would spend during the week brushing the pool. Because this cleaner suctions debris into the filter, it can cause the filter to get dirty rather quickly, so it’s imperative that it is cleaned often to get rid of everything that the cleaners sucks up when it vacuums.

Robotic Cleaners rely on the electronic motors inside the unit to power the cleaner so it can vacuum debris into its own filter through a separate pump. This type of cleaner is best used for pools that don’t attract large debris, like leaves. And it is the only type of cleaner that scrubs walls, as well as tile lines.
